Dual-Monitor Desk: How Wide You Actually Need

A dual-monitor desk should be at least 60 inches wide, and 72 inches is comfortable. Two 24-inch monitors sit about 42 inches across on their stands, so 60 inches leaves room for the stands plus a keyboard and mouse in front. Why Depth Matters as Much as Width

Two monitors do not just spread sideways — they sit farther from your eyes at the edges. To keep both screens a comfortable arm’s length away (20 to 30 inches), you want a desk at least 28 to 30 inches deep. A shallow desk forces the monitors too close and makes you turn your head sharply to see the outer edges. A monitor arm helps by pushing the screens back and freeing the desktop, which also lets you use a slightly narrower desk.

Angling Two Monitors

Most people angle dual monitors slightly inward, like a shallow V, so both screens face you. That angle adds a few inches to the total width footprint at the front of the desk but reduces how far you turn your head. Leave a little extra width so the angled outer corners do not hang off the desk edge.

Common Mistakes

• Buying by screen size alone. A 27-inch monitor is measured diagonally; its actual width is about 24 inches, plus the stand base. Measure the stands, not the screens.
• Forgetting the keyboard. You still need 12 inches of clear depth in front of the monitors for a keyboard and your wrists.
• Ignoring the desk edge. Angled monitors can overhang a too-narrow desk. Add 4 to 6 inches of margin.
