Read it the honest way: find the throw distance closest to where your projector actually sits, then check whether your couch lands inside the seating sweet spot for that size. If both agree, you’ve found your screen; if they fight, trust the room and size down.
Start with your throw ratio, not the screen
Nearly everyone does this backwards. They pick 120" because it sounds cinematic, then discover their projector can’t focus that big from 11 feet, or that it overshoots the wall entirely.
Measure first. Stand where the projector will mount — ceiling, rear shelf, or a coffee-table spot — and measure straight to the screen wall in inches. Divide that by your projector’s throw ratio for the maximum image width it can throw, then divide the width by 0.87 for the diagonal. A 1.5-ratio unit at 130" of throw gives an 87" wide image, which is a 100" diagonal — that’s your ceiling. You can always go smaller with zoom, rarely bigger.
Size a screen in four steps:

Check the aspect ratio before you fix the width
The table assumes a 16:9 screen, which suits mixed TV, sports, and streaming. If you watch mostly scope films shot at 2.35:1 or 2.40:1, a wider screen uses your wall better — but the throw math keys off width, so a 2.4:1 screen at the same diagonal is wider than a 16:9 one and needs more throw than the numbers above show. A 2.4:1 screen listed at 120" is about 111" wide against the 105" of a 16:9 120", so budget a little extra distance. Pick the shape first, then read throw distance off the screen’s actual width.
How far should you actually sit?
The image has to fill enough of your vision to feel immersive without making pixels or the screen-door effect obvious. A safe rule: for a 4K projector, sit about 1.2× the diagonal away; for 1080p, push back to about 1.5×. A 120" 4K image wants you around 12 feet back; the same screen at 1080p is happier at 15.
There’s a standard behind the rule. The SMPTE guideline puts a good cinema seat at roughly a 30-degree horizontal viewing angle, while the more aggressive THX target runs about 36 degrees — the wider the angle, the more the picture wraps your vision. Brightness has to keep up with the screen size
Every extra inch of screen spreads the same light thinner. Roughly double the screen area and you halve the brightness landing on it, which is why a projector that looks brilliant on a 100" screen can go flat and gray at 150". Screen brightness is measured in foot-lamberts (fL), and installers aim for around 16 fL in a fully dark, dedicated room.
Two things move that target. If you can’t kill every light, push toward 30–50 fL and expect to size the screen down to get there. A higher-gain or ambient-light-rejecting screen buys some back, but gain narrows the viewing cone, so it isn’t free. Pick the largest screen your projector can still light to a punchy level in your real room — not the largest it can technically fill.
Room width and ceiling height cap the size
A screen needs breathing room. Leave at least 8–12 inches of wall on each side so the frame doesn’t crowd a corner or a light switch, which means a 100" screen (87" wide) really wants a wall close to 9 feet clear.
Height matters just as much. The bottom of a 16:9 screen should sit around 24–36 inches off the floor so heads don’t block it, and the same eye-line thinking behind the right screen height off the floor applies. Oversizing in a bright room. A 150" image is thrilling in a blacked-out theater and washed-out gray at noon, because the same lumens now spread across nearly triple the area of a 100" screen. If you can’t fully darken the space, size down and gain brightness back — a punchy 100" beats a dim 130" every time.
The second common miss is ignoring the seating gap. People mount the projector perfectly, then park the couch six feet from a 120" screen and spend movie night turning their heads like a tennis match.
