Leave about 30 inches of clear floor on each side of the bed you walk past, and at least 24 inches at a minimum. At the foot, allow 36 inches if it is a main path through the room. These are the same circulation clearances designers use, and they decide whether a bedroom feels open or cramped. Below is where each one applies.
Clearance by Location
| Where | Minimum | Comfortable |
|---|---|---|
| Side you get in and out | 24 in | 30 in |
| Side against a wall | 0–6 in | 2–3 in gap |
| Foot of the bed (walkway) | 24 in | 36 in |
| Past a nightstand or dresser | 30 in | 36 in |
Where the Numbers Apply
You do not need clearance on every side. Push the headboard against a wall, and if the room is tight, push one long side against a wall too — you only need generous space on the side or sides you actually use. Thirty inches lets you make the bed and open a closet without turning sideways. Below 24 inches, the walkway starts to feel cramped and you knock into the bed.
Do Not Forget Doors and Nightstands
A door or closet that swings into a walkway eats the clearance you measured, so plan the bed around them. Nightstands add 18 to 24 inches to the bed’s width, so measure clearance from the edge of the nightstand, not the mattress, where you place one.
To see which bed size leaves these clearances in your room, use the Bed Size Calculator, see a worked example in the best bed size for a 10×10 room, and check nightstand sizing in nightstand height and clearance.

Leave about 30 inches of walkway on each side you use, and at least 24 inches at a minimum. At the foot of the bed, allow 36 inches if it is a main path through the room. A side pushed against a wall needs only a small gap.
Twenty-four inches is the tight minimum — enough to walk past and get into bed, but cramped for making the bed or opening a closet. Thirty inches is much more comfortable. If you place a nightstand there, measure from its edge, not the mattress.
If the foot of the bed is along a main walkway, leave 36 inches so people can pass comfortably. If it is not a through-path, 24 inches is enough to walk around the corner of the bed.
